A Spoonful of Sugar: How One Random Act of Kindness Can Change Your Day
You heard Mary Poppins say it first: “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.”
This catchy song reminds us that during tough times, a little bit of sweetness can go a long way.
Kindness is free, and doing something nice for someone actually has long-term mental health benefits.
A Chemical Shift
In a world that seems so conflict-laden, stress feels like it’s at an all-time-high.
Doing something kind and helpful for someone else actually lowers the stress hormone cortisol and increases reward and pleasure-sensing chemicals like dopamine, serotonin, endorphins, and oxytocin.
These shifts not only contribute to your brain feeling connection, but they also help you feel more purposeful and energetic.
Increased Connection and Empathy
It’s natural to also feel very powerless during stress and global conflict.
But perspective-changing is a powerful tool. When you’re given the chance to see someone else’s experiences, this fosters empathy, gratitude, and meaning-making in your own life.
These experiences can even build connection and compassion. Most importantly, acts of kindness may expose you to diverse groups, which is incredibly critical in helping expand your worldview and understanding of others’ experiences.
Kindness also boosts self-confidence.
The more we lend a hand, the more we’re able to see that we absolutely have the power to make a difference and contribute to global change.
What Can You Do?
Random acts of kindness can make a massive difference in your life - and the life of the person you’re helping.
If you need some inspiration, here are some ideas to try:
Pick up clothes you notice on the floor of the store
Take your shopping cart to the return cart section, rather than leaving it in the middle of the parking lot
Join in on singing Happy Birthday to someone at a restaurant
Leave an extra tip to someone who is working hard to serve you
Leave food and water out for outdoor animals (Mary Poppins would also encourage you to feed the birds, of course)
Tell a stranger you like their outfit or point out something nice you notice
Cook your grandparents a warm meal
Donate to a little library
Give a teacher a thank you note
Call a friend you haven’t talked to in a while and ask how they’ve been
Scroll through social media and congratulate 3 people on their accomplishments - even if you don’t talk often
Offer your umbrella to someone when it’s raining and they need to get to their car
Hug your parents and tell them you love them
Offer to pet or babysit for someone so they can have a night out
Send a friend a hand-made letter or gift
Pour a Spoonful on Everything
The possibilities are endless!
The point is to notice other people’s existence and help lift the burden off their shoulders for a little bit.
We all go through tough times. And while therapy can help, a little bit of kindness can also go a long way.
So I challenge you to start today! Spread a spoonful of sugar in everything you do!
Where could you insert a random act of kindness into your day today?
