Pride Month: Why Affirming Therapy Matters
LGBTQ+ individuals face unique mental health challenges that are often shaped by stigma, discrimination, and social rejection.
Research consistently shows higher rates of anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress among LGBTQ+ populations, particularly for those who lack supportive environments.
Minority Stress
One major factor contributing to these disparities is known as minority stress, chronic emotional strain caused by experiences such as bullying, discrimination, fear of rejection, and pressure to hide one’s identity.
Over time, these experiences can negatively impact emotional and physical health.
Family Rejection
Family rejection can also have a profound effect on mental health.
LGBTQ+ individuals who experience rejection from parents, caregivers, or religious communities may struggle with shame, loneliness, or low self-esteem. Young people, especially, are at increased risk for depression and suicidal thoughts when they do not feel accepted or safe at home.
The Difference in Affirming Care
These are only two of the many reasons why affirming therapy matters!
LGBTQ+ affirming therapy creates a space where clients feel respected, understood, and supported without judgment.
An affirming healthcare provider recognizes that LGBTQ+ identities are normal and valid and understands the impact that social stigma can have on mental health. And at Herr-Era, we are dedicated to individuals of all identities!
What is Affirming Care?
Affirming care can include using a client’s correct name and pronouns, avoiding assumptions about relationships or identity, and understanding the importance of cultural context.
It also means recognizing resilience. Despite challenges, LGBTQ+ communities continue to build strong support systems, chosen families, and spaces of belonging.
For many people, therapy may be the first place where they feel fully seen and accepted. A supportive therapeutic relationship can help reduce shame, improve self-esteem, and foster emotional healing.
Pride Month is not only a celebration of identity but also a reminder of the importance of safety, visibility, and mental health support.
Everyone deserves access to care that honors who they are without judgment or pressure to change! And it’s our honor at Herr-Era to be a part of that!
