feeling exhausted all the time.

Hi! It’s burnout! Your best friend as a chronically over-functioning person.

You probably know me really well.

I usually feel like your eyeballs have caved in because you’ve spent too long staring at your computer screen; or like your brain just hurts so badly that it may have turned to goo and is probably melting out of your ears AS WE SPEAK from being on overdrive this long.

Signs and Symptoms of Burnout

Sound familiar? Yeah… those are some warning signs that you might be too exhausted.

And if you find yourself asking: “am I burning out?” Chances are you’re already getting pretty close.

Oh, and remember when you had a life? Friends to hang out with? You probably don’t get to hang out with those. If you’re burning out, you start to isolate yourself and become more irritable.

You may start to feel like you’re shutting down and losing interest in things you once enjoyed and looked forward to.

You may also notice yourself feeling disengaged, detached, frustrated, hopeless, and exhausted.

Stress goes away when the stressor goes away - like a big paper, for example. But burnout is chronic stress that truly feels like you can’t go on any longer because your fire is just gone.

How To Help Relieve Burnout:

Burnout is not as easy to get rid of as you think.

It’s not just about a cute beach vacation or a couple days off.

It’s about true changes you’re able to implement that change the way you live and respond to stress.

  • Know Your Limits

    • What’s working out for you?

    • Is there anywhere you are or aren’t getting your needs met?

  • Respect Your Time

    • Set boundaries around when tasks start and when they end.

    • Schedule coffees with friends for 2 hours - not the whole day

    • Intentionally schedule cleaning between 9 AM and 12 PM, with a break for lunch. After lunch, switch tasks to something completely different to help you focus

    • Set timers to help hold you accountable

  • Respect Your Energy

    • What can you realistically do?

    • Do you really need to listen to the news every day to keep yourself informed or is it okay to only check in periodically, for the sake of your mental health?

    • What are some ways you can step away from workplace drama and conversations that drain you?

  • Build Patterns That Strengthen You

    • What can you do today to change the way you’re interacting with your life?

    • What do you need to feel more supported from people in your life?

  • Make Time for YOU

    • Begin to create a life that helps you feel connected to yourself.

    • Therapy can help with this!

    • Take time to laugh! Spend time volunteering, in nature, and around animals!

    • Be intentional about how you’re looking for beauty and belonging.
